  The One Coloring Book Question Every Parent Should Ask Before Buying I used to think a coloring book was just a coloring book. Grab whichever one is closest to the checkout counter, hand it over, done. My kid gets something to do, I get five minutes of quiet, everybody wins. Then I actually sat down and watched what happened after I bought a few different ones. Some got used for weeks. Some got colored on once and disappeared under the couch. And a couple of them, my kid literally handed back to me and said "this one's boring." That's when I started paying attention to why some worked and some didn't. And it wasn't about the pictures being cuter or the cover looking nicer. It came down to a few things I never used to think about at all. So now, before I buy (or make) any coloring book, I ask myself one question: Will my kid actually want to pick this up again tomorrow? Not "is it cute." Not "is it cheap." Will they want it again.
